Suzy Roy

Our September 2022 classes are now open and ready for registration!

You can go directly to our webstore to secure your Project class registration, or call or stop by the shop to register for a Safari class. Or scroll below to see the September schedule.

A reminder of general shop/class policies:

When you register for a WoolWinders Yarn Shop Safari Knitting Group, Project or Technique class you are acknowledging that you have read and understand the following.

Knitting Groups, Project classes and Technique classes are a vital part of our community. Our instructors spend many hours preparing and on instruction. We kindly ask that you consider the impact on your instructor and your LYS community as you read the following.

Class Registration Policy

Payment is due at time of registration. Participation is limited to a specific number so that instructors may provide the most personalized instruction. Availability of space is not guaranteed and may be secured only when payment is made for a particular month. The class fee is not refundable after payment unless the spot can be filled with another participant. WoolWinders reserves the right to cancel classes with less than three registered students three days prior to the first day of class due to insufficient registration. Full and complete refunds will be made to students who registered for a class and the class was canceled by WoolWinders. Refunds will be made in the same form of payment accepted during registration. There are no make-ups and no refunds if a customer misses a Safari Knitting Group, Project or Technique class/session.

Class Participation Discount

A 10% class participation discount will be applied to all purchases in the month of class participation. As such, students receiving a class participation discount are required to use only yarn purchased from WoolWinders during their class sessions.

Membership Program

Customers participating in a Safari Knitting Group class may choose to reserve their spot by signing up for a Safari Knitting Group Membership on our website. A membership reserves your spot in the group if the membership is active. Payment is automatically charged on the 1st day of every month for enrollees.

Customers may pause their membership if they do not wish to attend class for a specific month but would like to continue to reserve their spot in the class for the following month. It is the customer’s responsibility to notify the class instructor as soon as possible. It is the customer’s responsibility to place their membership on hold on the website before the first of the month. If the customer does not place their membership on hold, the customer will be automatically charged for that month as usual and will not be issued a refund.

There are no make-ups if a student misses a class session. If an instructor initiates the missed session, a make-up or refund for that session will be given. WoolWinders reserves the right to substitute instructors, as necessary. Customers may choose to cancel their participation in the Membership program at any time.

Disclaimer

WoolWinders Yarn Shop will not be held liable for any inability or error in using purchased materials or in receiving oral class instruction. Nor will the store or its employees be held responsible for any yarn that has been purchased and wound incorrectly by the customer. WoolWinders Community is Staying Connected!

Suzy Roy

INTRODUCING

WoolWinders Virtual Social Safari

Knitting & Crochet Groups

At WoolWinders Yarn Shop, our monthly group classes are called 'Safari' classes.  Our Safari class is our most popular class with many Safari students gaining lifelong friendships.

With the current COVID-19 pandemic we know many of our Safari friends are missing the social aspects of the classes.  It's more than just the instruction (although we've been told the knitting project help is KEY!).  But also the Safari classes are a way to connect with the WoolWinders community, our friends.  So to help all of us out in this time of social distancing, we're offering FREE Virtual Social Safari sessions!

The Virtual Social Safari sessions are online video chat sessions hosted by a WoolWinders staff member.  We are currently keeping these to a limited number of virtual seats.  These web-video sessions are not meant to be instruction or project help but instead used as a way for us to all connect with each other during this difficult time.  Come be social (virtually!) with us!

Find the session that works best for you, registration is free but we need your email so we can send you the session link.

As the days and weeks of our social distancing continue, we'll launch more Virtual Social Safari sessions, so check back often and register for the sessions that work for you!  The WoolWinders family will get through this (albeit at a distance!).

WoolWinders Instructor Gives Back to Community

Suzy Roy

Susan Allaway, WoolWinders staffer/instructor, was selected as a Judge for the Skein & Garment Competition at the 2019 Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival.  Susan was thrilled to see and judge the wonderful finished garments that were submitted by our talented fiber arts community.  There were multiple awards for finished items, including those made from hand spun and breed specific yarns as well as items that were made from Maryland fleeces.  According to Susan, all were just stunning.  She urges you to stop by the judged exhibition at next year's festival.

Susan teaches many classes at WoolWinders and is the ongoing instructor for the Fixing Mistakes and Finishing Technique classes.  After having been exposed to all the inspiring handmade items at the 2019 Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival, she stresses the importance of properly finishing a garment.  Simple techniques such as weaving in the ends, blocking, and seaming are essential to completing a project that was so beautifully made by hand.  Check out all of the classes offered by the extraordinary WoolWinders instructors or stop by the shop for a printed schedule.

Knitspiring Story

Suzy Roy

Jeanne Tufano was recently featured in an article on the Holy Cross Health website titled “After Melanoma, Reconstructive Surgery Helps Restore Jeanne's Quality of Life.”  Jeanne chose the Woolwinders Rockville shop as the location of the photo shoot for the article.  Read Jeanne’s testimonial below which speaks about her connection to knitting and Woolwinders.  We are so happy that Jeanne has conquered her battle with melanoma and has returned to Woolwinders for her weekly Safari class.

" Woolwinders was a large part of my recovery.  The friends I’ve made through Safari and other classes, as well as the staff, helped me deal with the healing process of my physical “deformity”.  Knitting has always been my happy place. Woolwinders has given me a happy place to knit.  Now I have two happy places in one!  I chose Woolwinders to be the place for the centerpiece of my photo shoot because in addition to its being the best LYS in the area, it's also the best place to learn and grow as a knitter and a person."  -- Jeanne Tufano
