April 6:Reversible Lace Shawl: What a great way to learn lace—a nine stitch/two row repeat that creates a gorgeous lightweight shawl perfect for warmer days and evenings
April 13/20:Lacy Bamboo Shrug: Easy, quick and lovely. Can you ask for anything more? Five skeins of bamboo yarn and size 11 needles will make this lacy, openwork shrug perfect for spring and summer evenings.
April 27:Linen Stitch Tie: Is is knit? Is it woven? Find out while making this fantastic tie perfect for Father’s Day or your favorite grad! We made ours from one skein of Koigu but you can use any fingering weight yarn!

June 15:Store Closed for Noni Bag Program
Our Saturday KALS have taken on a life of their own! Join the group for wine, snacks, and knitting your project each Saturday of the month. You don’t need to attend every session, but we do recommend that you attend the first week to get some basic instruction and guidance.
MARCH:CABLED SHELL. Get ready for spring. This DK weight shell is a blast to knit, and is far easier than it looks. Created from two cable patterns, it has a flattering line and is the perfect weight for wearing alone or under a jacket.
APRIL:LACE SAMPLER. If you have been eager to try lace, April is the month for you! We will give you the patterns for 12 lace squares that can then be sewn into a gorgeous sampler. Recommended yarn is CASCADE SIERRA—please come to the shop ahead of time to check out our stock—we can show you color cards and special order the yarn for you! This 42 X56” afghan will run you less than $150!
MAY:DIAGONAL TRIANGLE TANK. We call this the Miracle Tank—it looks good on everyone! Unravel the mystery of modular knitting while you knit this lovely sleevelee or short sleeve top. We recommend either the ARTYARNS Regal Silk yarn, Patricia Roberts DK, or Karabella Vintage Cotton. And we’ll spend a lot of time on gauge at the first session—in modular knitting you must get row and stitch gauge!
JUNE:BEACH BAG. Knit yourself a Beach Bag that will carry you and all your gear through the summer! The perfect stressless knitting—no shaping or fit!
Ah Spring! The season of rebirth, regrowth, color, and fresh air. All combine to make the season perfect for the fiber arts. Is it any wonder that some of the most famous fiber festivals take place in spring? And WoolWinders is ready to add more fiber to your diet with our expanded class schedule. We’ve added programs in the morning and noontime hours to meet the needs of our growing customer base.
Our SAFARI classes have become so popular that we now hold them two evenings and two mornings a week. We’ve copied the concept in an abbreviated form to offer KNIT CAFÉ on Thursdays from 12-1:30; come join Paige as you challenge yourself with a knitting project a bit beyond your comfort zone! And we are offering ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS and ADVANCED BEGINNERS on Wednesday mornings during the spring. Craving CROCHET? We offer both BEGINNING and ADVANCED classes this season. Our Sock classes continue to be wildly popular, and this season we offer THREE ways of knitting socks: DPN, Circular, and Toe Up!
We are often asked how to progress through our classes. We recommend that you start with ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS, work on a couple of easy scarves or swatches, and then learn more complex skills in ADVANCED BEGINNERS. Once you have learned about gauge and pattern reading, check out the SAFARI, during which you will work on a complex project that benefits from instructor and group input. Want to learn the absolute most you can in a short period of time? Take any one of our SOCK classes after ADVANCED BEGINNERS. Even if you never knit another pair, this class will teach you advanced knitting skills that you will use to progress on any project! Aside from that, check out our specialty classes. Are you a mored advanced knitter? Check out our KNIT TO FIT class; you will be designing before too long.
We have created a small classroom in the back to accommodate semi-private or children’s lessons during the daytime hours. If you are interested, please let us know. We can teach you and a friend/child in relative privacy, and you can design your own class schedule/topic! These lessons, like our classes, are open to our customers who purchase their yarn from WoolWinders.
When you register for class, we ask you to provide your email address and phone number so that we can reach you in case of any change in schedule. One week prior to the class, you will receive an email confirming your attendance and material list. PLEASE make your purchases prior to the first class so you can have them ready. Please note: WoolWinders classes are open to our customers who purchase their yarn from the shop. We offer a 10% discount on all materials for the class as well as any purchases you make during the class. In addition, you receive a 10% discount for multiple classes or classes you sign up for within a week of the last session.
Please note that the shop wil be closed on SUNDAY, March 23 for Easter, SUNDAY, May 11 for Mother’s Day, and SUNDAY, June 15 for Father’s Day. We are also closed MONDAY, May 26 for Memorial Day.
We ask for payment at the time of registration. If you need to cancel a class, you will receive store credit if you do so within seven days before the first class session. After that time period, no refunds are possible. And while we would like to offer make-ups for missed classes, staff time simply doesn’t permit that. To register for any of the classes, please call the store at 240.632.9276. Thanks.

WoolWinders Class Descriptions
Technique Classes
Absolute Beginners: No previous experience or knowledge of knitting required. In two two - hour sessions we will learn the cast-on, knit and purl stitch, bind off, decrease and increase. Students will be able to create a simple project by the end of the second class.
Materials: One skein of worsted weight yarn and size 8 needles
Advanced Beginner: Move to the next step by learning how to understand gauge and read a pattern. Students will complete a doll sweater.
Materials: 150 yards of worsted weight yarn. Bring sizes 7-9 needles to the first class if you have them.
Knitting Safari: Get out your pith helmet and blowgun! We will progress to the next step by selecting a project of your choice that is beyond your current capabilities. Work with a teacher and group for four weeks (8 hours) to learn pattern reading, stitch definition, color work, or anything else you want!
Materials: A project too difficult for you to do alone. We will help you select the perfect one!
Knit Café: Spice up your lunch hour with us! We’ll help you choose a challenging project and help you every step of the way. Join other like-minded knitters for 90 minutes of lunch and knitting!
Materials: A project beyond your current capabilities.
Socks: Ever wondered why sock knitting is so popular? Socks are fun, useful, and very portable projects! Learn the basics of knitting socks: knitting on double pointed needles, turning a heel, and weaving stitches at the toe using the Kitchener stitch! You will complete a mini-sock in the class. Must know how to cast on, knit, decrease, and pick up stitches.
Materials: One skein of light colored worsted weight wool and size 5 or 6 DPNs.
Socks on Circular Needles: Intrigued by socks but muddled by doublepointed needles? Learn to make socks using two circular needles. Never drop another dp needle on the metro again!
Materials: One skein of light colored worsted weight yarn and 2 circular needles size 5. The needles may be 16 or 24” in length.
Toe-Up Socks: Whether you are new to sock knitting or just ready to try a new way to knit socks, this class will teach you to knit socks from the toe up. With this technique you’ll never have to worry about running out of yarn again, and you can also try the sock on as you go. You will learn a provisional caston, shortrow heel and toe, and how to knit on double-pointed needles. Students must know how to caston, knit, and purl, but it is not necessary to have worked on double-pointed needles.
Materials: One skein of light colored worsted weight wool and size 5 or 6 DPNs.
Finishing Techniques: IFinishing is often what makes or breaks your handknitted sweaters. In this class you will learn a variety of finishing techniques, including: seaming, shortrows, 3-needle bindoffs, picking up stitches, measuring for buttonbands and button placement, and making buttonholes. We will also discuss the importance of blocking.
Materials: Please bring to class a ball of smooth, light-colored, worsted weight yarn, appropriate needles, and two 4" x 4" swatches knitted in stockinette stitch.
Entrelac: Entrelac is a technique for knitting interlaced rectangles that appear to be interwoven, giving a basketweave effect. The technique makes use of short rows and picking up stitches, and looks more difficult than it really is. In this two-hour class you will learn the basic technique by knitting a swatch, and will discuss other uses for the technique. Students must know how to knit, purl, decrease, and pick up stitches.
Materials: Please bring worsted weight yarn in two different colors and needles of an appropriate size for the yarn. A crochet hook for picking up stitches may be helpful, but not necessary.
In addition to classes, we offer private lessons for $35/hour. Lessons are available during daytime, evening, and weekend hours.
Classes are limited to five participants and fill quickly. Payment is due upon registration. Cancellation policy: up until one week before class, full payment is returned via store credit. After that, no refunds are given.
In case of inclement weather, please call before coming to the store; we will leave a voice mail message.
* Most classes have a small material charge. Please call before class to get materials; you receive a 10% discount on all project purchases.
