    WINTER 2010 Class Schedule

The WINTER 2010 Class Schedule is available here.
    Sundays in the Salon

Winter provides an opportunity to get back to your own knitting and crocheting! Enough of the selfless gift giving. Take a deep breath and join us this winter for the Saturday Knitalongs and/or our shorter Sunday in the Salon programs. All programs are FREE OF CHARGE and are held from 2-4 PM. Please respect our policy and work with yarns purchased from WoolWinders. Thanks!

February 7: Snowboard Hat: Get out your big needles and superbulky yarn for this weekend knit that will keep your head warm through the rest of the winter!

February 14: Felted Ballet Slippers: Love to make slippers but hate doing short rows? This is the pattern for you. Knit flat and sewn together—add a great button and you are good to go!

February 21: Reverse Cable Scarf: One of our most popular programs. We will teach you to make a scarf that has cables on both sides.

February 28: Pocket Scarf: Keep your hands toasty warm in this really easy and yet unique scarf.

March 7: Cable Headband: As spring approaches, you might not need the warmth of a whole hat. Make this headband instead.

March 14: Laurel Pram Blanket: We are often asked “What can I do with ONE SKEIN of Laurel”? Here’s your answer. The very talented Stephanie designed a few “pram” or stroller blanket patterns that are featured in the Spring Newsletter. And we’ll show you how fantastic they are!

March 21: Felted Oven Mitts: Get a jump on Mother’s Day gifts with these clever oven mitts that are knit and then felted for ultimate protection!

March 28: Spring Crocus Tote: Welcome in spring with a felted tote that features the first seasonal flower as embellishment.

    Saturday Knitalongs

Join us each Saturday for longer Knitalongs. Whether you want these fall beauties to end up as gifts to yourself or others is totally your call! All programs are free of charge and run from 2-4 PM. Please respect our shop and work with yarn purchased from WoolWinders.

JANUARY: Fair Isle/Aran Afghan Squares Requires more advanced knitting skills, including pattern reading. Join Paige as she guides your through both the Fair Isle and Aran (cable) techniques to make a beautiful afghan.

FEBRUARY: February Lady Sweater. OK, corny, we know. But let’s celebrate the month with its eponymous sweater. And it’s flattering to boot.

MARCH: Laurel Shawl Make this beautiful lace shawl out of the hand-dyed Laurel yarn to welcome in spring!

    HOW'S YOUR JUNE SHAPING UP?

We are offering TWO NEW SAFARI SECTIONS in June! The SAFARI is our most popular class-with these three we now have EIGHT sections going on each week. What, may you ask is a SAFARI? And more importantly, do you need to wear a hat and bring a blow gun? The answer to the latter is a NO. But the SAFARI is an exploration of your knitting, bringing it to new heights. In the Safari, you pick a project that is beyond your current capabilities, and work throughout the month with a teacher and group. You get instruction, support, and comaraderie. What could be better?

The new classes will be held THURDAYS 9:30 am-11:30 AM with PAIGE (calling all color knitters) and SUNDAYS 10-noon with KATHY (only one spot remains in that one).

The folks who succeed in our safaris like working in groups and understand that the level of individual attention does not match that of a private lesson. But the tradeoff is the new friendships and lots of fun.

Interested? Give us a call at 240.632.9276 to sign up. The cost is $95 for the four week session, except for the SUNDAY session, which is 3 classes for $71.25 (no class Father’s Day).

And CROCHETERS, stay tuned. Beginning in JULY, Marietta will be teaching a SATURDAY MORNING SAFARI from 9-11 am. It will be the only section featuring BOTH crochet and knit projects.

    MARK YOUR CALENDARS!

For Thursday evening, June 4. We will be featuring the fabulously talented indie (and local) dyer SHELBY KNITS. Shelby will be here with her many colorways of washable sock yarn that WoolWinders will be proud to carry. We’ve known Shelby for a few years, and when she approached us to carry her yarn, we jumped at the chance. The sock yarn is only the beginning. Check out her beautiful colorways:

She’ll be at the shop with 30 skeins of yarn from 6-8 PM. We are thinking these won’t last long, and won’t it be fun to expand our selections of SHELBY KNITS!!!!

    WEEKEND @ WOOLWINDERS

We have recovered from our sale, and with the help of our awesome staff have rearranged things in the store. Come check us out! And come hang with us during the SATURDAY KAL (placemats) and the first of a two-part SUNDAY IN THE SALON—the SHRUG. This SHRUG is amazing—it looks good on everyone! And in addition, it is a great way to learn the basics of lace knitting. You will need about 320-360 yards of worsted weight yarn and needles size 10.5-11.

Just in time for the shrug, we have received a reorder of SCHAEFER YARN. How popular is this vendor? We went through 12 SKEINS OF A SINGLE COLOR OF LAUREL in TWO DAYS!!!!

And please note, we are closed Monday for the Memorial Day Holiday. Safe travels and/or Happy Knitting!

    BONNETS FOR BAILEY

Thanks to our intrepid group of knitters AND crocheters who came out today to work on caps for Bailey. Aunt Sharessa was in attendance, of course, along with some amazing goodies she made for the group, as was Stephanie, who did the previously impossible and actually got us to crochet correctly using a left-handed method. Now the question remains can we nominate her for Montgomery County Teacher of the Year? If she could teach us to crochet, imagine if we really had her for high school chemistry. Lucky students at Walter Johnson HS.

If you were unable to come today but want to contribute a cap for Bailey who has started her chemotherapy already, we have a basket filled with hats and patterns. Sharessa will be taking them to her on THURSDAY, MAY 28. We appreciate all of your help!

And thanks to everyone who came out for our sale. You made it our BEST SPRING SALE EVER!!!! We exceeded our sales goals and now can focus on all the yummy fall stuff we will be shopping for at the TNNA show in a few weeks. As always, we thank our staff as well, who were right there will pre/during/and post sale help and support.

    WEEKEND @ WOOLWINDERS

We love Spring weekends at the shop; the door is open, the wine is poured, and everyone just seems to relax a bit. So join us this weekend as we work on our PLACEMATS during the Saturday KAL and we offer a very special program in the Salon on Sunday.

From 2-4 PM we will learn how to make CROCHET FLOWERS and KNIT HATS for a lovely young lady who is undergoing chemotherapy for leukemia. BAILEY is just four years old and has asked her wonderful aunt SHARESSA to make her PINK HATS to cover her hair loss. Sharessa naturally turned to her friends at WoolWinders for some help. So join us for a very worthy and personal cause. Sharessa and STEPHANIE (crocheter extraordinaire) will be on hand to help. Yes, even we will be crocheting!

    Bailey & Snow.jpg

We will make an exception to our 12 spot rule for this wonderful day, but we do need to limit the number to 20 because of fire regulations. So if you want to pitch in, give us a call to reserve a spot. The program is, of course, free of charge and will run from 2-4 pm. Bring your circular 16” needles size 6 or 7 as well as a G or H crochet hook. We have plenty of yarn for you to purchase.
