Looking for a worthy CHRISANUKWANZAA charity knitting project?

Woolwinders: A Knitting Salon is collecting knitted articles to be distributed to the residents of McAuley Square (a sponsored work of the Sisters of Mercy – Vermont). McAuley Square is comprised of three programs and buildings that provide services and housing for homeless teenage mothers and children, and Seniors (homeless “elderly” aged 55).

We’d like to concentrate on hats, mittens, scarves, slippers, and/or socks for children aged 6 mos – 6 years as this group presents the biggest need. However, any/all donated items are welcome. Donations will be collected November 6th – December 18th. We’d appreciate your help with pinning a tag to your item to indicate approximate sixe and care instructions (fill-in-the-blank tags will be provided).

Many thanks for your generosity.

Fall 2008 Class Schedule

The Fall 2008 Class Schedule is available here.
Sundays in the Salon

Join our annual fall tradition of ‘TWELVE WEEKS OF CHRISHANUKWANZAA” during our wildly populuar SUNDAYS IN THE SALON. Each fall we focus on gifts: the funky, the fabulous, and the fast.. We are grateful that so many of you, staff and customers alike, come up with great ideas and models for the shop! Thanks one and all.

Missing the larger projects? We have moved those to SATURDAY KNITALONGS. Check out that schedule as well. We begin each project the first Saturday of the Month and work on the project from 2-4 each successive Saturday.

Please note: The SUNDAYS IN THE SALON and SATURDAY KALS are NOT substitutes for Beginning Knitting Instruction. All sessions require you to possess basic knitting skills: Casting On, Knitting, Purling, and Binding off. If more advanced skills are required, they are listed. Signups for the Sunday programs begin one week prior to the scheduled date; you may sign up for the Saturday KALS a month ahead of time. And these programs are held for the enjoyment of our customers who work with yarn purchased at WoolWinders.

September 7/14: SHRUG: We made this last spring using Bamboo and then used a wonderful merinot to make one for the fall. This is the shrug that looks good on EVERYONE and is a quick and easy lace knit!

September 21: MITERED BAG: knitting is a lot of fun, and this is an uncomplicated way to learn it. You ‘ll learn about modular knitting AND felting while making this bag.

September 28: BUTTON WRAP: Perfect for cooler fall weather, this is a simple rectangular wrap done in a mistake rib pattern and secured with three large buttons. We’ll teach you to make buttonholes, don’t worry!!!

October 5 and 12: CROCHET NECKLACE: Join Marietta in creating a lovely necklace that will enhance any holiday outfit.

October 19: CASHMERE SCARF: One skein of Jojoland cashmere creates this easy lace scarf. A perfect accessory, and a great way to learn lace.

October 26: MOTLEY MITTS: and funky mittens for the future cold weather.

November 2: FELTED BOWL: These make the greatest quick gifts!!! Perfect for holiday candy, nuts, or gift cards! We have both plain and ruffled patterns and we’ll teach you how to use dpns!

November 9: KEYHOLE RUFFLE SCARF: We thank our friend Pauline for the inspiration of this sophisticated silk and mohair scarf. Fast and fun.

November 16: METRO MITTENS: Join Kerry in creating the trendy mittens that hide a metro card in a pocket. Students love these!

November 23: GIFT BAG: These were a huge hit last year. Whether you Fair Isle or not, the bag shows you went the extra distance in packaging that gift!

November 30: CROCHET PENGUIN: Don’t forget the kids! Marietta will guide you through this adorable stuffed animal that gets a lot of attention at the shop.

December 7: SELF FRINGING SHAWL (SCARF): One of our most popular programs. One or two skeins of merino ribbon makes a quick fantastic gift. Best of all? The scarf or shawl makes its own fringe. Big needles/fast project/elegant results.

December 14: FLURRIES WALLET: OK, we know you are cracking for the last minute gifts. This is a great one. Just leave time for the felting.

December 21: FLAP HAT: No matter how dressy the winter coat, this is the ultimate accessory. Takes about two hours and is so funky it works!

Saturday Knitalongs

Our Saturday KALS have taken on a life of their own! Join the group for wine, snacks, and knitting your project each Saturday of the month. You don’t need to attend every session, but we do recommend that you attend the first week to get some basic instruction and guidance.

SEPTEMBER: TOP DOWN RIBBED SWEATER. Learn a new direction in knitting! If you’ve never knit from the top (or even if you have )this is a wonderful pattern, as it is shaped to a flattering line through ribbing. Any worsted weight yarn will do (we used the lovely NANCY from SCHAEFER YARN). The great thing about top down? Minimum (or no) finishing required!

OCTOBER: WINDOWPANE SWEATER. We have patterns for either pullovers or cardigans. This is a quick and beautiful knit that employs the slip stitch technique. It makes use of a self striping yarn (Wooly Stripes) and a chunky solid. It’s a quick knit that could be done within the month!

NOVEMBER: HOLIDAY WRAP: Everyone needs a dramatic wrap for those holiday parties. We will show you three patterns from which to choose—and all of the sparkly and gorgeous yarns that you can use!

DECEMBER: FINISH-A-LONG. By popular request, we are going to dedicate Saturday afternoons to catch up times to finish all those gifts! Join us to complete the things you started at the shop.

SWATCH-A-THON

Last night’s SWATCH-A-THON was a huge success (despite the storm), thanks to the efforts of twelve wonderful folks who came out and helped us knit up all our new yarns. By the end of today we should have them all displayed around the shop—STEPHANIE was kind enough to take some home to get them a warm bath but promised to have them back early today. We’ve walked around the shop this morning and feel certain that we now have models or swatches of virtually EVERY YARN IN THE SHOP. So now when you want to see how something works up, we can show you with confidence! Thanks again to everyone who came last night. You rock!!!!

Join us this weekend as our KAL progresses—everyone’s BABY OWL is looking adorable. And we even have a matching hat pattern to give you c/o KATHY Y, KATHY C, and MARIETTA who worked it out! And on Sunday we are featuring the popular MULTI-DIRECTIONAL SCARF. Learn modular knitting in the easiest way possible using ANY YARN YOU LIKE FROM THE SHOP. ANY GAUGE, ANY YARN!!!!!! And we’ll even show you how to turn it into a shawl. As always, both programs run from 2-4 PM and are free of charge. Just give us a call so we save you a seat!

And the uber-gorgeous ROWAN 44 is back in the house! These flew out of here last time so if you want one put aside, give us a call. We will hold your copy with a credit card, or even mail it out to you!
